CyberGuard spiffs up Webwasher to filter adware at the gateway

CyberGuard has released a new version of its Webwasher Content Management Suite (CSM), which is designed to proactively filter adware/spyware at the gateway, before it ever has a chance to get inside the network.

Beyond the expense incurred by its simple consumption of bandwidth, adware also poses a security threat to corporate networks. A file downloaded from a spoofed website can contain malicious code that has been scrambled to avoid traditional antivirus detection.

"Adware and Spyware infections of PCs in companies are a major pain point and cost factor today," said Cyberguard vp Horst Joepen.

"To be able to address this need, channel partner should offer a strong product that really does the job. Our new product offers access to immediate short sales cycle projects with almost non-discretionary budget."

Webwasher has been designed to offer two-pronged protection. First, it proactively strips content and code that enables adware to be downloaded, installed and executed at the gateway. Second, it disrupts adware already inside from sending or receiving information.

The company claims no other vendor has done this previously.

"Stopping it at the gateway/perimeter with combined and proactive filters is new," said Joepen.

"Spyware offerings mostly are desktop products to clean up when an infection already had happened. Webwasher Content Reporter can pinpoint on infected machines while protecting at the perimeter, and thus prevent new infections, providing the analysis of how to dry out the swamp".

Webwasher CSM 5.1 has also added a filter against mobile code attacks and expanded its reporting capabilities to pinpoint infected machines in the company network. The release is available now in software-only versions and on the recently announced WW1000 security appliance.

"The Proactive Filter technology and that several filters intelligently are linked and "talk" to each other to detect blended threats," said Joepen.

The new release is designed to offer three major benefits to customers.

"Customers will see lower support/maintenance cost for their desktops; the stopping of loss of private and confidential data; and avoiding damage of reputation," said Joepen.

"Our target market is mid size to large corporations. We've no special vertical focus, but clearly financial institutions are early adaptors."

Cyberguard sees its competitive edge as a focused solution that at the same time is combined in a complete integrated Web and Email Content Security suite that also offers scalability and performance.

"This fills the gap between desktop Adware cleaners like Ad-aware and classic antivirus scanners, either on desktops or the gateway, that today don't recognize adware or spyware, but still focus on the classic virus scanning, or have adware only as part of their SOHO market products, such as Trend Micro or Symantec," said Joepen.
